Although It has been said that the modern tie is a Victorian invention, it is difficult to actually discern where the evolvement of the coloured ribbon gentlemen wear around their necks began.

Troops of chinese emporers,  are said to have worn neck decorations, and Croations fighting for the French in the 17th century during the rein of Lois X111 wore coloured neck decorations to celebrate victories. This brigade or Royal - Cravate gave its name to the cravat.
